The municipal election in Three Hills will be held October 18, 2021, with an Advance Poll being offered on October 13, 2021. After the votes are counted on the night of October 18th, a new Council consisting of four councillors and one mayor will be elected to represent you for the next four years. Three Hills is a municipality which elects its mayor through the ballot process where the entire community selects the mayor. Other municipalities elect their mayor from within Council, where the entire group of newly elected officials chooses among themselves who will sit as the mayor of that municipality for the next four year term. Both methods have their merits.
The big difference with the municipal election in Three Hills this year is that there will be five elected officials in total, instead of seven, which, until now has been the standard. After a lot of constructive debate, Council agreed to change the numbers from seven to five. The largest discussions about this change stemmed from the notion that 'seven people make better government than five', or that 'Three Hills is not so large that we should need seven governance officials sitting around a table to get things accomplished'. These were some of the points discussed, and at the end of these debates, it was decided that Three Hills will go to a system which has five elected officials.
The main reason I wanted to include a bit of election process on my site is to provide background and clarity for those who have asked me about the mechanics of how and why this years election has a slightly different look. The biggest thing we can all do for the future of Three Hills is to get out and vote on election day!
